1. Holiday name and date

Name: Dragon-Boat Festival or Duanwu Festival

Date: the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar (usually in late May or June in the Gregorian calendar, 31^st May in 2025).

2. Origin of the festival

The festival honors Qu Yuan, a famous poet and minister who lived over 2,000 years ago. When his kingdom was invaded, he drowned himself in a river out of despair. People raced boats to save him and threw rice into the water to feed his spirit—this is how dragon boat racing and zongzi began.

3. The Main Traditions

3.1 Dragon Boat Racing
Teams paddle colorful long boats to the rhythm of drums, symbolizing the rescue attempt for Qu Yuan. It’s also a fun team competition!

3.2 Zongzi
Sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, with sweet or savory fillings (like dates or pork). Originally meant to feed fish, now a tasty festival food.

Hanging herbs (like mugwort) to ward off evil and diseases.
